  I went there with a small party for my birthday. First off the management told us the deck was closed when it wasn't then encouraged us to not eat outside because of "a bug problem." The place was crawling with roaches. We sat outside anyways. They told us the bartender was off and that my party couldn't get alcohol. Once we got out food the crab legs were rotten. We brought this up to the very polite and helpful waiter who retrieved a manager (who reeked of alcohol). The manager said he serves 200 lbs a night of crab legs and then he slammed our bill down before we were finished eating and told us he wouldn't serve us alcohol earlier because we were intoxicated. We had not drank any prior to our horrible visit, his judgement was obviously poor from his high level of intoxication. I politely tried to explain the situation and he cursed at us, physically intimidated us, and told us to pay, leave, and never come back again.
  
  Avoid this restaurant at all costs.

  First time at Captain John's and was a positive dining experience. The friendly staff seated us at a table overlooking the waterway. The server promptly took our order and we had our meal within twenty minutes. The place was spotless including the bathrooms and that says a lot about the management. Great food and great service. We'll definitely return in the near future.

  Most of the restaurants in "Restaurant Row" down River Road in Calabash have been great for decades and generations. Capt. John's provides tasty local seafood in a nice atmosphere with views of the waterway and fishing boats. Service can vary between waiter/waitress. I have been lucky to receive great service, thus far. I have to say the best welcoming hostess I experienced in my two week stay.
